Maybe we're not all that well suited for this job... We care. We're optimistic. We think we can help make this a better place for people to spend some time outdoors with their families. We might be fooling ourselves, but we still have to try. I came up with the idea of putting a friendly note on every picnic table, gently reminding people of Quiet Hours. All the bosses loved the plan, so I got busy with my computer and printer and came up with these...
Next I got permission to play with the laminator, and borrow a staple gun and a hammer. (I have to confess to having a weakness for lamination. It goes against my general distaste for plastic, but I can't help it. To me, a nicely laminated piece of paper is a real thing of beauty.) Before long I was on my way through the campground, going from table to table, ka-chunk, ka-chunk, ka-chunk, ka-chunk, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM. Staples smacked firmly into place, harder to pry loose, on I went to the next site. Scotch tape in hand too, I stuck signs in all the bathrooms and all the showers. There's one at the gate that you have to look under to find the fee envelopes. These things are plastered all over this campground. No way anyone can miss the message. I feel a little bit better taking some kind of action. Left to handle things without much help or backup, we're just doing the best we can in a lawless land. I find it pretty amusing that as camp hosts, we aren't allowed to handle the campground money, but we do get to wrangle drunks. Yeeee-haw!
Three very dirty guys just came by to let me know they'll be staying for 3 or 4 or 5 nights. They're all over 40, and somebody's mother just dropped them off, so they have no car. But they do have two mean looking pit bulls, and one of the men is named Buster. They paid cash in advance (dropped into the fee box at the gate, of course, since I don't handle money), and assured me that all they want to do is drink a lot of beer and swim. I'm sure the beer drinking started hours ago. When I reminded them about the 10:00 Quiet Hour, they further assured me that they're usually passed out by that time. Okie dokie then. I guess we won't have any trouble with these guys. Maybe my signs are already working. Maybe the mere energy of them is attracting a better quality of Drunk to the park. Oh golly, I sure do hope so.
PS - This is Post # 200. Wow. Cool. I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself.
